Many countries use a points system for driving licenses, including countries in Europe, North America, and South America:
- Europe: Bulgaria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, and the United Kingdom
- North America: Canada and the United States
- South America: Brazil
The most common method for applying points is the "demerit points system" (DPS), where points are accumulated for violations until a certain threshold is reached. Once the threshold is reached, the driver's license becomes restricted.
